Oregon Is spending millions of dollars to repair the horrible roads and make driving a nightmare in the Portland area.

This winter, we’ll get 2" of snow, ODOT will call for mandatory tire chains, and the roads will be back to exactly as bad as they were prior to all this construction  after a few hours of abuse from the chains.

What do you mean with making driving in Portland a nightmare?

Traffic is already bad what with the large population growth over the past decade or so. Shutting down most of/all of two of the major highways in order to re- pave lanes makes it even worse. It got so bad when they shut down the interchange between the east/west and north/south downtown commuter highways that I even noticed it on my short bike commute.

They don’t need to mandate chains. Half of these fuckers are going to run studded tires the next 6 months and destroy the roads anyway *eyeroll*

That’s the truth. Why can't they just be outlawed?!

What PotentialHeapOwner said. Gobs of lane closures, ramp closures and even closures of major thoroughfares added to an already congested city. Not to mention the giant canyons they carved into I-205. I was in a hurry/coffeeless stupor one morning while hooking up my trailer- those giant dips informed me that I forgot to latch the ball. Thank God for safety chains. I triple check everything now.

Or at the very least taxed out of favor.

I don’t need the freeway for my commute, but one lane of Naito has been closed since August. They’re planning on repaving a large section of it. This is a very small thing in the grand scheme of road repairs, but it’s causing major headaches already and they don’t expect to finish for at least another year.

The roads are bad, and desperately need repairs, but you're absolutely right that chains and studs will destroy the new roads in no time.
